Josh Atkinson bowled Bideford to a remarkable victory on the opening day of the Francis Clark Devon Cricket League season.

The teenage pace bowler took six wickets for just eight runs, including a hat-trick, as Ottery St Mary were dismissed for 27 to lose by 201 runs in the C division match at Westward Ho! yesterday.

Ottery's reply was all over inside 13 overs as Atkinson (6.5-3-8-6) and Fred King (6-1-19-4) ran through their line-up.

Atkinson finished the innings by dismissing Tom Whitworth (bowled), Will Harrison (lbw) and Zac Johns (bowled) in successive deliveries.

While Bideford's young pace men did the damage with the ball, it was one of the experienced players who was the mainstay of their innings.

Matt Allin struck 89 off 115 balls with eight fours and two sixes. He shared in stands of 95 with James Ford (37) for the first wicket and 73 with Josh King (37 off 27 balls) for the fourth.

North Devon began the premier division season with a heavy defeat at Plymouth.

James Toms (105) and Marnus Labuschagne (126no) scored centuries as the home side posted 318 for three from their 50 overs.

Rob Ayre top scored with 30 for North Devon who were beaten by 150 runs, all out for 168.

Newly-promoted Hatherleigh made a winning start to life in the A division, beating Brixham by 89 runs.

Jack Cherrington (60) and Simon Gillespie (53) made half centuries in Hatherleigh's 251 for six before Brixham were bowled out for 162.

Braunton, who were already expecting a difficult season, got off to a bad start as they were bowled out for just 65 by Heathcoat who won by nine wickets.

In the B division, George McEndoo made 61 for Barnstaple and Pilton but, replying to Tavistock's 297 for seven, they were dismissed for 161 to lose by 136 runs.

Filleigh were also defeated in their D division opener against Halberton after being bowled out for 152.

Francis Clark Devon League – 1st XI – premier division: Plymouth (20pts) beat North Devon (3) by 150 runs. Plymouth 318-3 (J Toms 105, M Labuschagne 126no). North Devon 168 (R Ayre 30; S Stein 3-30).

A division: Hatherleigh (20) beat Brixham (5) by 89 runs. Hatherleigh 251-6 (R Chapman 48, S Gillespie 53, J Cherrington 60no). Brixham 162 (A Lewin 90).

Heathcoat (20) beat Braunton (0) by 9 wkts. Braunton 65. Heathcoat 66-1.

B division: Tavistock (20) beat Barnstaple and Pilton (6) by 136 runs. Tavistock 297-7 (D Manning 66). Barnstaple and Pilton 161 (G McEndoo 61; S Daymond 4-28).

C division: Bideford (20) beat Ottery St Mary (4) by 201 runs. Bideford 228-9 (M Allin 89, J King 37, J Ford 37). Ottery St Mary 27 (J Atkinson 6-8, ****** 4-19).

D division: Halberton (20) beat Filleigh (4) by 7 wkts. Filleigh 152 (J Marsh 30; J Mayes 3-18). Halberton 155-3 (J Mayes 71no).
