FOR the fourth year running the North Devon Journal is joining North Devon + to promote apprenticeships.

Last year's Apprenticeship Campaign saw the creation of 1,395 apprenticeships in North Devon and Torridge, with a further 749 in the 2012 campaign.

Over the years, critical questions have been asked of the apprenticeships initiative. Is it really worth it? Do young people actually get a job at the end of it?

This year's campaign aims to answer these and other questions.

Over the coming weeks the Journal will catch up with all the apprentices featured in the campaign to see where they are now.

Simon Appleby featured in last year's campaign when he started a digital marketing apprenticeship in July 2012.

He is now employed full time as social media and digital marketing Officer at North Devon + which established the Employment & Skills Board, which is responsible for the CAmpaign.

He said: "I've gained in confidence. I've got a level two qualification and obviously I've got a full time job out of it.

"I'm doing further English and maths qualifications and I could potentially progress to a Level 3."

As part of his job, Simon is responsible for the schedules, timings and content of all social media posts, the updating of the organisation's website and the production of e-newsletters.

He said: "I also work with clients providing a monthly report on how much engagement there is.

"I like doing the reports and seeing how you can change a message to improve performance."

Since Simon was employed on a full-time basis, the company now has a second apprentice, Bradley Wilton.

Laura Holt, sales and marketing manager said: "There is a considerable amount of assistance available to help employers take on an apprentice.

"Our apprentices learn on the job from day one and quickly become valued members of the team."

Apprenticeship vacancies will be advertised in the Journal's recruitment section on January 30 and there will be an apprenticeships showcase on Thursday, March 13 at the Barnstaple Hotel.
