The first students to study a BA honours degree in North Devon began the course this week at Petroc.
The 35 students will be embarking on one of three BA (Hons) Professional Development Degrees, specialising in either Childhood Studies, Business and Management or Creative Industries at Petroc’s Brannams campus is Barnstaple.
The courses will be part time, over two years, and will follow on from one of the college’s Foundation Degree programmes.
It will focus on developing the students’ career by topping up their current foundation degree here in North Devon rather than having to do it in Plymouth.
Clair Roberts was among the students starting this week.
She said: “It is thanks to my foundation degree that I have been able to set up a business and sell my products, so I am thrilled that I can complete my degree here in North Devon.”
“Some took their foundation degree five years ago and have been waiting all that time to gain a full honours degree,” said Programme Leader Pete Newell.
“For many of these students they don’t have the option to go away to university, so could not complete their degree any other way,” he added.
Craig Litster, Petroc’s Higher Education Coordinator, is excited about the new offering.
He said: “This is a culmination of many years of hard work by staff, Plymouth University and most importantly our students and speaks volumes for the thriving and expanding Higher Education community here at Petroc.”
The graduates from the Foundation Degree programmes will be parading through Barnstaple High Street at 11am on Saturday October 5.
