I write this before the results of the Torridge District Council by-election for the Shebbear and Langtree ward are known, but I would like to make a point about the election tactics of certain political parties.
Personally, I consider it is unfortunate that party politics should be brought into the district council at all.
At district level, it is the quality of the individual councillors that affect our lives most directly. I would like to think that the electorate will vote for the man or woman who will best stand up for individual rights in matters such as planning and environmental protection that affect us all.
Therefore it pains me to see that over-enthusiastic supporters of a major national political party have been hard at work vandalising the election posters of a first-class candidate who will, given half a chance, work hard to fight the current malaise within the district council.
Presumably this antisocial action is just because she has the backing of a minor but up and coming national party that they see as a threat to their traditional supremacy in rural Britain.
When you read this, the election will be over, and I hope the supporters of all the candidates will be just as enthusiastic in removing all the signs and posters that sometimes get left to blight the landscape for weeks or months to come.
