Back pain, is it just in the back?

A few weeks ago I attended a Chiropractic

seminar. All healthcare professionals have to attend a certain amount of

seminars each year to maintain their educational standards and license to

practice. We often attend many more than the required amount and usually this

involves methods and training in how to help people efficiently. This time was

a little different because our staff came as well and the subject of the

weekend was Chiropractic philosophy. Often in Chiropractic practice it is easy

to get caught up in the daily technical issues of getting patients out of pain

and then forget the more important underlying reasons of why we do it. I also realized that most patients think that

Chiropractors help with back or neck pain and have no idea that their

Chiropractic care has a much wider health implication far beyond the resolution

of pain.

My purpose as a Chiropractor is twofold,

firstly to improve the function of the nervous system and secondly to educate

patients toward a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life. When someone has

symptoms of any illness, or pain from any condition, it is a sign that things

are not working properly. These symptoms are produced by the aberrant areas and

conveyed to the brain by the nerves that are the communication pathway for all

of the billions of cells that make up the human body. This is the nervous

system – the communication highway to and from the brain, which is the master

control system for the body. The nervous system communicates with the brain via

the nerves which all come through, or are closely associated with the spinal

column. Chiropractors are trained to locate areas that are not working

correctly. These areas are called Subluxations or Vertebral Subluxations.

Therefore Chiropractors locate and correct Vertebral Subluxations. This is all

we do because in the removal of Subluxation, the body is then free to heal

itself, which is a process over time. This is natural healing – not alternative

and not complementary.

There are many causes of Subluxation from

the birth process to falls, accidents or stress. Stress can come in the form of

mechanical stresses, emotional stresses or toxic stresses such as chemicals or

pollutants. Our secondary purpose as Chiropractors then is to educate people as

to how they can reduce stresses in their lives and teach natural healthcare

free from drugs, vaccines and surgery. Most of us have grown to believe that

these things are necessary to avoid disease and prolong life but then if this

was true the world would not be in a state of constant health crisis – would
