Man and woman deny illegal occupation of caravan

A man and a woman have refused to enter pleas when they appeared in court accused of breaking planning laws.

Rob Lothian and Susan Lothian, who asked to be known as Rob and Susie, said they would not enter pleas at Exeter Crown Court because they are not beggars.

The two defendants are each charged with failing to comply with a North Devon District Council enforcement order to stop the residential use of a caravan at Higher Bidbrook, West Anstey, near South Molton.

The enforcement order was made on March 31, 2015 and the council allege it should have been complied with by November 1, 2015.

Rob and Susie are accused of being in breach of the order between that date and May 26, 2016 by failing to cease the residential use of a mobile home and failing to clear up the site following its removal.

Judge Erik Salomonsen said the case will proceed as if there was a not guilty plea and set a trial date for March 2, 2017.

The judge urged them to obtain legal representation.
