A MAN stole cheese, meat pies and a Casio watch over the weekend after he had been drinking, a court heard.

Shaun Mudd, 24, of Exeter Road, Braunton, pleaded guilty to four offences at North Devon Magistrates' Court on Monday morning.

The court heard Mudd attempted to burgle a room at the Woolacombe Bay Hotel early on Sunday morning.

He then entered a holiday home in South Street, Woolacombe, and took a Casio watch worth £30.

After this Mudd entered the Village Chippy in Woolacombe. He took cheese and two meat pies from the fridge.

Sonia Croft, for the prosecution, said a couple, who were staying at the Woolacombe Bay Hotel, were asleep when Mudd tried to enter their room through the window.

The man took hold of Mudd, who jumped, or fell. Damage was caused to the drain pipe Mudd climbed up.

Next Mudd entered a holiday home. Mrs Croft said: "A mother and son were in the home. He was awoken by noises.

"They found Mudd on the stairwell outside the flat."

Mudd dropped the meat pies and cheese he had taken from the chip shop in front of police. He was handcuffed in a police van and smashed the plastic screen, worth £500, inside.

Tony Dart, for the defence, said his client was "remorseful and distraught".

Mudd has been remanded until September 19, where he will be sentenced at Exeter Crown Court.
