Three golds in track and field

THREE athletes from North Devon clubs won gold medals at the South West Veterans Track and Field Championships in Exeter.

John Shapland, of Bideford AAC, set a championship record at 5,000m, winning the M60 race in 17mins 59secs. That result completed a double after he had won the 1,500m title in 5-06.51.

In the same age category, Ian Snow, of Torrington AAC, won the 300m hurdles in 59.13 and the 2,000m steeplechase in 8-42.50. He took silver in the 800m in a time of 2-46.89.

Marilyn Blair, of Torrington AAC, is a South West champion over 5,000m after winning the women's over-50 category in 21-10.74.

She claimed three medals overall with silver in the 1,500m in 6-07.46 and bronze over 3,000m in 12-33.59.

The 3,000m race was won by former Bideford athlete Cathy Newman, of Exmouth Harriers, in a championship record of 10-49.70.
