The A39 road between Barnstaple and Bideford, which was shut this morning due to two crashes, has now reopened.

One crash involved a motorbike and a lorry on the link road which happened at 8.25 on the link road north of Instow. The motorcyclist was not seriously injured and the road was cleared by 9.05am.

Police have confirmed the second incident involved a car and a trailer and occurred not far from the other crash.

Nobody was injured in either incident and all vehicles are now recovered and the roads reopened.

Bus services in the area have also been affected, the North Devon Wave 21 service at Fremington is experiencing “significant delays”.

There’s been a breakdown on service 70 between Torrington and Bideford, which has been further delayed by congestion.

Other services affected include the 85 between Barnstaple and Bude, the 315 between Barnstaple and Exeter and the 319 between Barnstaple and Hartland.

In this morning’s thick fog it’s been reported that numerous vehicles were seen turning around across the oncoming lane with visibility very low.

Fred Ovey, 67, a retired teacher, from Bishops Tawton said: “I was very cross to see car drivers and indeed HGV drivers turning around across the oncoming lane.

“It’s totally irresponsible and could easily have caused another accident.

“I was stuck in traffic for an hour and a half and saw several cars and trucks turn around.”

Fred was driving from Bishops Tawton to Bideford on the A39 between 8am and 8.30am.

The other crash near Westleigh happened just before 9am and one lane is closed.
