A mother and her children were taken to hospital following a three car crash between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe yesterday afternoon.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene on the B3230 at Shirwell Cross in Muddiford after a Vauxhall Tigra, Nissan Micra and a Volvo collided just after 4pm.

The woman driving the Volvo suffered minor injuries, as did her children who were in the vehicle. Police could not confirm how many children she had in the car with her. They were all taken to North Devon District Hospital as a precaution but were later discharged.

The front seat passenger of the Micra, a 56-year-old man, suffered chest injuries and was also taken to hospital by ambulance. He was given a CT scan at hospital, which showed only minor injuries, before being discharged.

The road was closed in both directions at Muddiford Inn while crews dealt with the incident and recovered the vehicles.

Local diversions were put in place, directing traffic through Braunton, which caused congestion as rush-hour traffic built up in the area.

The incident was cleared and the road reopened by 6.30pm.
