PLANE: Following publication of a shot of an old aircraft taken by R L Knight, a professional photographer of Barnstaple, I asked if anyone recognised the background? Well, 91-year-old Bill Griffiths of Bideford rang me to say he distinctly remembers the plane landing opposite Appledore some time around 1938. This would tie in with the search around this time by the RAF for suitable landing sites whether on land or water, with Chivenor being the preferred option. I have to say I still can’t correlate the background with the Instow skyline but things have greatly changed in the last 76 years or so.
