A 25-year-old woman had to be airlifted to hospital by the police helicopter after falling ill on “treacherous” terrain near Torrington in the early hours of this morning.
It is understood the woman was taken ill in thick woodland near to the Tarka Trail near Weare Giffard at around 1.30am.
The woman’s friend raised the alarm with emergency services but was unable to give a precise location other than “thick woods somewhere near Weare Giffard” in terrain described as “treacherous”.
Ambulance crews contacted Devon and Cornwall Police requesting assistance due to the woman’s tricky location.
A police officer managed to locate the casualty on foot and administered first aid to her before an observer from the force helicopter was able to reach them.
The woman was stabilised and an ambulance crew provided medical aid before she was carried to an accessible area.
She was then airlifted by the police helicopter to North Devon District Hospital where she was treated.
It is understood she has since been discharged, although her injuries are unknown.
