Witheridge on the climb to top six

WITHERIDGE player-manager Chris Vinnicombe says he sees no reason why his club cannot finish in the top six of the South West Peninsula League Premier Division this season after they beat second in the table Camelford 2-1 on Saturday.

It was Vinnicombe's third straight win as Withy boss following victories over Falmouth and Liverton.

It is a run that has seen the club move into the top half of the table, but Vinnicombe says where Withy finish will not be down to any target he sets.

"It is how high the team want to get," said Vinnicombe. "We have just said to the players to keep picking up points, especially away from home. If we can then win our games at home it will get us up the table.

"We have got two wins away from home and one win at home now.

"There is no reason why we can't keep picking up points and doing well and perhaps ending up in the top six. That would be good for the club."

Witheridge fell behind to a Mark Gusterson penalty at Camelford, but fought back to claim the win. It is this team spirit which gives Vinnicombe the confidence that his side can continue their climb up the table.

"We have always said to the lads 'keep going until the final whistle, don't stop'," said Vinnicombe.

"They kept going, they kept pushing and they got their reward in the end, which is all credit to them.

"Even if they are one, two or three-nil down they will keep going to the final whistle, it doesn't matter what is happening on the pitch.

"We were going in 1-0 at half-time thinking 'here we go, we are going to concede another one and we are going to fold', but the players grabbed the bull by the horns and said 'right we are not going to get beat here'.

"Obviously, playing second in the table it was good to know that it doesn't matter who you play, whether it is top of the table or bottom of the table, the players are doing the same things week-in week-out."
