Police have warned business owners and shopkeepers to be vigilant after a watch and a wad of cash contained in a wallet were stolen from a property in Newport, Barnstaple.

The bundle of notes, totalling £700, consisted mostly of £50 notes and was stolen from the property in Broadfield Road some time between 10pm on Tuesday, December 11, and 9am the following day.

The burglar entered the house through the front door, searched the house and found the stolen items in the dining room.

The houseowner was asleep upstairs at the time.

Police have asked any local businesses to contact them if they have had people in store asking to change £50 notes into smaller denominations.

Anyone with information about the burglary should contact police, on the 101 non-emergency number, quoting crime reference number CB/12/3996.
