Hundreds of spectators turned out for Barnstaple’s annual Grand Prix day on Sunday.

The sun shone as competitors from across the country raced pedal cars and customised lawnmowers through the town centre.

The event, organised by Petroc College and BIDBarnstaple and sponsored by Silver Street Automotive, was in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

Spectators lined the streets to cheer and wave flags as competitors raced around up and down the Strand.

As well as all the action on the track, entertainment was provided on the Square including live music performances from Days Gone By and The Breaks.

Organisers are still counting the money raised for the Children’s Hospice South West, but say they look likely to exceed their £1,000 target.

Especially seeing as all the A39/A361 traffic is currently being diverted through Barnstaple on Sundays as the moment as well, must have been a nightmare for traffic!

Why couldn't they have this "event" in a field not in the town as on Sunday this rubbish closed the town centre and the roadworks on the bypass together caused A LOT of traffic. Lawnmowers are actually better suited to grass and they could create a more interesting course in a field or chivenor runway is perfect if they want a road like surface.
