The annual proclamation of Barnstaple Fair took place at the town's Guildhall on Wednesday.
Various dignitaries, councillors and businessmen from across North Devon gathered for the event which sees the four-day fair officially opened.
During the ceremony a large white glove was suspended above the Guildhall which town mayor Lesley Brown mentioned in her speech.
She said: "When you leave the guildhall raise your heads to see the hand of friendship which welcomes visitors from far and near.
"I know some of our guests our very local, and others have had to show their passports to get to Devon, but wherever you have travelled from today, thank you for joining us on our special day."
