A RUGBY team, pensioners with inflatable Zimmer frames and belly dancers were just some of the costumes featured in Appledore Carnival yesterday.

The annual event, which is organised by community group Appledore Pirates, kicked off yesterday at 4pm.

Hundreds of people thronged the streets of the village as the carnival parade processed through the village centre.

Dozens of floats as well as walking entries took part.

People in the crowds agreed the good weather encouraged a good turnout.

One of the carnival judges, Dave Crout, from Bideford, manager of Value House, said: “We had to give The Beaver Inn first prize for the pubs’ entries, their rugby team is amazing.

“All the entries have been amazing this year, there has been a lot of effort put into them all and it was a hard job to choose between them.

“The weather has been great which always helps. For a little village the turnout is always impressive.”

Another judge Sue Gibbs, from Northam, added: “It was very hard to choose. Mrs Brown’s Boys were also very good and the all the majorettes. It is such a nice event to be a part of.”

Wendy Tarling, from Northam, added: It has been a great event so far it is good to see the community really getting involved and getting together.”
