AN 18-year-old yodeller from Devon has made it through to the boot camp stage of hit TV show X Factor.
Barclay Beales, from Bow near Copplestone, started his audition at Wembley Arena by yodelling from back stage.
He got a yes from all four judges after taking centre stage and performing a unique cover of One Direction’s hit What Makes You Beautiful.
Following his performance, which was televised on Sunday evening, judge Nicole Scherzinger exclaimed she “loved him” while Take That star Gary Barlow described him as a “brilliant yodeller”.
Barclay, a former pupil of Crediton Queen Elizabeth School, has performed at several venues across Devon including The White Hart in Bow and at St James’s Park, Exeter City’s football ground.
The teenager, who also studied music at Exeter College, has never taken a lesson in yodelling and instead taught himself the talent after being inspired by another reality TV show.
He said: “I saw a girl on America’s Got Talent called Taylor Ware in 2006. She was yodelling on there and I thought it sounded amazing, so I got on my computer and taught myself to do it.”
The Devon-born musician, who has recently returned from a European cruise tour, said he had received dozens of messages after the show aired on Sunday evening.
He said: “I find it scarier watching the programme back than actually auditioning, seeing what people’s reactions are.”
“My friends think it is awesome and my parents are unbelievably proud.”
According to Bet365, Barclay is currently 40/1 to win the competition.
