Union seeks better grants deal for UK

Farming leaders are pressing European MPs for a better deal for the UK when rural development grants are shared out.

They are especially concerned about a threat to 20 per cent of farmers' direct payments which would disadvantage many farmers in North Devon.

The NFU has told the MEPs that current direct support levels in England and Wales are already below those of France, Ireland, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

The union says it is unacceptable for the UK to receive the lowest per hectare allocation of development funds of all member states and is asking for a change in policy.
