A MAN is to appear in court this morning charged with causing more than £5,000 criminal damage, possessing a bladed weapon and affray.
Kristian Maddocks, 35, of Barnstaple, was arrested in Hughes Avenue in the early hours of yesterday morning.
It is alleged he wielded a meat cleaver and used it to cause damage to lampposts and other street furniture in the residential area.
Armed officers were sent to the scene at around 1.45am and were forced to taser the 35-year-old, who was described by police as “incompliant and behaving violently”.
Residents who had gathered in the street to watch the commotion were asked to go back indoors.
Police said around 20 lampposts were damaged on Hughes Avenue along with other street furniture.
Maddocks is charged with causing criminal damage of more than £5,000, causing criminal damage under £5,000, possessing a bladed weapon and affray.
He will appear at Exeter Magistrates’ Court today.
