BEDS at Torrington Community Hospital will reopen within weeks now Northern Devon Healthcare Trust has confirmed the site just needs to be re staffed first.
In July, the trust and the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group announced a project due to start on September 1 called Transforming Torrington Together.
Under the project it said patients would be treated at home by community rehabilitation and nursing teams rather than in the hospital as an in-patient. Outpatient clinics would continue as normal.
This meant ten beds at the hospital would close.
Since then huge opposition has mounted against the scheme leading to a protest in the town and Torridge District Council and the MP for Torridge and West Devon Geoffrey Cox supporting the scheme’s opponents.
In August NDHT revealed the beds would reopen in time for the consultation to start.
But campaign group, Save the irreplaceable Torrington community hospital (S.T.I.T.C.H), were led to believe the beds would reopen after the August bank holiday.
The chair of the group, Margaret Brown, said: “We were led to believe the beds would be reopen on the Tuesday but when they weren’t reopened we asked further questions at a drop-in session and then were told on Friday the beds couldn’t reopen until the hospital’s staff were back in place.
“It just seems like there are continuous mixed messages all the way through.
“It is just really frustrating because you ask a straight forward question and you don’t get a straight answer.
“It is a way forward. I can’t say it is positive until the beds are filled but we are encouraged by what has taken place because at least the beds will reopen for now.”
As well as the beds being reopened there will also be a further public meeting with the trust on September 14 at 10am at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington.
There will still be a meeting held at the Plough at 6pm on September 12.
The healthcare trust and the clinical commissioning group said: “As our press release of 23 August indicated, we are still working on the plans at Torrington and will finalise them as soon as possible.
“The beds will be open to admissions but the arrangements are complex, so we would ask people to please bear with us.”
