TRAFFIC on the A361 North Devon Link Road between Tiverton and South Molton has ground to a halt this evening as Council Highways staff battle to keep it open.
Drivers on the North Devon link Road near Tiverton reported traffic had stopped moving on the road at around 5.30pm.
And Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed traffic has stopped flowing in the area a few miles either side of Knowstone.
Chris Sims, in the Devon and Cornwall Police control room, said police have not officially closed the road.
"There is snow still falling in the area," he said, but highways staff are up there with two snow plows and two gritters doing their best to clear the road.
"The met office weather map shows a narrow band of snow cutting across the county, effectively from the north coast to the south.
"It is being worked on though, and we haven't given up or said 'we're losing the battle'.
Traffic is more or less at a standstill but we hope to be able to keep that traffic moving."
One driver who called the Journal said she had initially been making slow progress on the road, in a queue of traffic which was following a snow plough.
However, the flow of traffic ground to a halt at around 5.30 and the woman said, along with dozens of other cars, has been stationary for around an hour.
Earlier, driving conditions on the road were described as 'hazardous' although traffic had been making progress on the road.
