A date has been set for the trial of a former boarding school teacher accused of 21 historic sex assaults against boys.
Pensioner John Downing, 72, was not required to make a plea and spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared for the first time at Exeter Crown Court.
His case was adjourned for a plea and case management hearing on December 5 and Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, set a provisional trial date of June 9, 2014.
Downing, of Water Lane, Torrington, is accused of nine counts of indecent assault or gross indecency on a boy under the age of 14, between 1968 and 1974.
He is also charged with three indecent assaults and three acts of gross indecency with another boy between 1979 and 1982 and six charges of indecently assaulting two other boys between 1970 and 1976.
Downing is a former housemaster at the Heanton Court boarding school, which has since closed.
