THE name of a promising duo from Westward Ho! may suggest they have been trapped in time. Although if this is the case, they couldn't have picked a better time to be trapped.

Because Oscar Wenman-Hyde and Dan Powe, also known as Forever Young, are only 16 years old – an age when the world is at their feet and the future is bright.

But this is not all. The promising musicians have been making waves on the local scene and have built up quite a following. And now, at their tender age, they have even released an album.

What The Future Holds was released on November 4, and showcases the lads' brand of electro acoustic folk. It consists of 11 songs, all self-written, which the boys have been performing at local haunts around Westward Ho!, Bideford and Barnstaple.

More recently, however, their gig wings have spread further afield – the duo having toured the UK and appearing at venues such as The Fleece in Bristol and the Skiving Scholar in Plymouth.

Oscar, who writes the lyrics, plays rhythm guitar and sings, is influenced by indie and Brit-pop. Lead guitarist Dan's influences are slightly different, but he spoke about how the partnership works:

"We are both extremely happy with the album and very proud of how far we have come," he said. "I personally am influenced by rock and metal so it is really exciting to see what comes out when we mix influences.

"I feel that it is a very unique sound and is something that is not very touched upon in today's music."

As well as an album launch party at The Champ, Appledore, Oscar and Dan appeared on the Roy Grimes show on The Voice FM to discuss their music and play a few tracks on air.

"The show went really well," said Oscar. "It was the second time we've been there and we always have a good time and feel welcome by Roy.

"We talked a lot about the album plus played four songs, and can't wait to go back."

Among their influences the pair cite Oasis, Starsailor, Ed Sheeran and Newton Faulkner. Despite being the title of a Bob Dylan song, their name was merely plucked out of the air.

For such a keen pair of lads, 2014 should prove to be as action-packed as 2013.

"I don't know what the future holds," said Oscar, "but I like to think we will make it all the way as we are both determined enough to do so.

"It's not about how many records we sell, it's about having fun and the music. Money is just a bonus!"

Forever Young play The Malt Scoop on Friday, December 20, 7pm. What The Future Holds can be downloaded at www.forever young666.bandcamp.com, and check out the band's Facebook page for gig information.
