MUDDY conditions did not prevent course records being set by Tom Adams and Caroline Hewitt in the South Molton Struggle.

The 7.8-mile multi-terrain race posed few problems for Adams, a fell runner from Ilkley in Yorkshire.

He smashed the previous record by 3mins 29secs, finishing in 42-47 – more than three minutes clear of the field.

Tavistock's Jim Cole, making his return after a long layoff, was second in 46-05.

And the local challenge was led by Ronnie Richmond, of North Devon Road Runners, who took third in 46-20, one second ahead of Christian Hewitt, from Tiverton Harriers.

Christian's mother Caroline, a Vet45 athlete, dominated the women's race, winning by almost two minutes with a course best of 53-56.

Lucy Goodman, of host club South Molton Strugglers, took second in 55-53 and Alicia Leal, from North Devon Road Runners, was third in 56-24, improving by almost four minutes on last year. David Cutler, Steve Abell, Paul Cooke and Chris Simpson led South Molton to the team prize.

Bideford AAC host the Bideford Ten Miler on Sunday, starting from the quay at 11am.

Jimmy Murray, of Bideford Blues, set a personal best of 2hrs 48mins 4secs at the Dublin Marathon on Monday. He finished 117th overall.
