TWO Barnstaple broadcast journalists are behind a bid to secure the town with its very own television channel.
Cameramen Chris Harris and Jan Stapley have set up Barnstaple Television Service, following the announcement from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), that the town has been short listed as one of 65 possible locations for a local TV channel.
The Government has set aside £40 million from the licence fee to set up the 65 local stations, and Chris and Jan hope they will be among the first stations up and running.
If they are successful they could be up and running by next September if they are among the first 20 areas awarded a licence in January.
The station would transmit on channel eight on digital TV and go out to 36,000 people in Barnstaple, Braunton and Croyde.
The pair want people in Barnstaple to write to the DCMS with letters of support for a Barnstaple station.
