A surfer had to be checked over by paramedics after being rescued off Woolacombe beach this afternoon.

Two dog walkers contacted the coastguard after spotting the surfer in difficulty at around 1.30pm.

Ilfracombe’s all-weather and inshore lifeboats launched to his rescue.

However, while lifeboat crews were making their way to the scene, two other surfers helped the man in difficulty and brought him back to shore.

A spokesman for Swansea Coastguard said the man had got into difficulty while attempting to paddle back to the beach.

Both of Ilfracombe’s lifeboats were stood down before they arrived at the scene, so crews turned the boats around and returned to base.

The surfer was checked over by the Morthoe Coastguard and Rescue Team and by paramedics from a rapid response unit which also attended.

He was “tired and suffering from cramp” but otherwise well.
