THIS photograph perfectly captured the moment a common dolphin and her calf jumped out of the water alongside the MS Oldenburg ship.
Ruth Griffith, a wildlife officer for MARINElife, was on board the vessel which was travelling between Lundy Island and Bideford on August 10.
A group of 10 dolphins were swimming around the ship including this mother and calf which Ruth managed to snap at just the right moment.
"I have just recently got a new lens so thought I would give it a whirl," she said.
"The other encounters I've had with dolphins were never that close.
"It was amazing. I could not believe it when I saw what I had taken.
"You don't know what you have captured until you look afterwards."
Ruth said she started as a volunteer with MARINElife in July which involves her travelling on board the Oldenburg once or twice a week.
Her role is to educate passengers about marine wildlife they may see while on board the boat.
