Society sees rising figures

BREEDERS have joined the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society in record numbers, members heard at the annual meeting.

For the last five years farmers have registered an average of 3,654 shorthorns every 12 months and the British Cattle Movement Scheme (BCMS) has seen a 42% increase in pure and cross breds registered.

Society president Mark Holmes said: "The increase in registrations and memberships, coupled with BCMS data, indicates that Beef Shorthorn is doing what it says on the tin. It is proving to be low maintenance and hardy with the ability to forage."
