KATHY MARTIN swapped one saddle for another as she made her entry into classic trials competition in the Holsworthy Motor Club event on Sunday.
A former British amateur showjumping champion, the 41-year-old mother from Bratton Fleming lined up on a Honda CRF as almost 50 motorcycles took to the route.
So much did she enjoy the experience that the next day she was searching for another competition. She found the North Devon Motor Club Tarka Trial coming up on Sunday.
The idea of trialling came to Kathy after she went to watch the Isle of Man TT for a 40th birthday celebration with her partner Ian and son Daniel, both competitive bike riders.
"I bought the Honda to take to the TT – that was my transport when I was there – then went back this year," she said. "The bike had been sitting in the garage and I just thought I would enter the trial."
After clearing several hills, she described the experience as "brilliant". Her only previous similar event was a field trial. "I loved that and wanted to have a crack at these," said Kathy. "A field trial is in and out of rivers and over obstacles, real slow-paced stuff, all on one site.
"Before I had Daniel, I had Vespas and I used to go all over the country to scooter rallies. Then the bike was sold, but Daniel is 14 now and I have just bought another Vespa.I just want to live a little before I'm too old."
Kathy is not finished with showjumping yet though. "I have still got one big horse and a companion I got from charity and I still ride, still compete," she said.
