An undercover police operation has been hailed a success after a shoplifter was arrested and cannabis was seized in Ilfracombe.
Plain-clothed police officers took to the streets of Ilfracombe town centre on Tuesday to conduct an operation targeting low level crime.
A woman, who was known to the police, was stopped and questioned by plain clothes officers.
The 27-year-old local woman was arrested and later charged with stealing food from the Co-operative store earlier this week.
Police also seized an amount of cannabis from two individuals, one of whom was a 21-year-old local man.
Both men received warnings before sent on their way.
Officers said they carried out a number of searches on other individuals who were suspected of criminal behaviour. However, no other arrests or warnings were given.
PC Dave Thubron, beat manager for Ilfracombe town centre, said the operation was a success.
He said: “I’m very pleased with the results and am looking to conduct them more regularly at all times of the day.”
“Our business is about making it as unwelcome and uncomfortable for criminals as we can. This type of operation is certainly going to be repeated.”
