Shaun Sawyer has today been confirmed as the new chief constable for Devon and Cornwall Police.
His appointment was made official at the meeting of the new Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel today.
Mr Sawyer has been the force's acting chief constable since the departure of Stephen Otter last year.
The decision to appoint him was supported unanimously by all members of the panel.
Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg said he was "absolutely delighted".
He said: "He was the outstanding candidate during the selection and interview process and has demonstrated a clear vision and strong leadership.
"We have already built an excellent working relationship, and I am now keen to build on that further as we develop our strategic policing
plan for this area.
"This gives Shaun the mandate to take his plans forward and I look forward to working closely with him."
Devon County Councillor Roger Croad, chairman of the panel, said: "I am confident that with Mr Sawyer's expertise and leadership he will continue to provide an excellent policing service."
