SEARCH and Rescue crewman Sergeant Paul Hunter, who formerly served two years with 22 Squadron at RMB Chivenor, has received an award in the New Year’s Honours List.
He won the Personal Commendation of the Air Officer Commanding No 2 Group.
During his 20 years of service in the RAF, he has spent the last 12 years on Search and Rescue duties.
Rated as an outstanding winchman, he has accumulated 532 rescues in the UK and 89 rescues in Afghanistan where he volunteered to be a medic as part of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) on board the Chinook.
He also coaches junior winchmen to become Combat Ready operators.
Despite all this, he still managed to find time to train and lead the RAF shooting team to victory in the Inter-Service Shooting competition, personally becoming the military’s best shooter.
Based at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire, he is currently studying to become a Qualified Helicopter Crewman Instructor.
