Schools to work even more closely as co-operative trust

A CO-OPERATIVE schools' trust will be set up in November in the Bude area after a successful first consultation period.

The trust is being set up between Buehaven Community School and six primary schools within the school's catchment area.

Bude Communities' Schools' Trust is designed to ensure a better quality of learning for pupils at a time when pupil numbers are falling in the area.

The first consultation period began on May 31.

After a series of meetings at Bude's secondary school a draft report was prepared by the Co-Operative College on July 9.

Sean Rogers, from the Co-operative College, said: "Rarely have I had such an easy report to write.

"The support of the local community to the proposals put forward is emphatically endorsed."

In their draft report the Co-operative College said the level of response was unusually high.

More than 2,600 consultation packs were issued and only one response indicated opposition to the plan.

On the back of this a co-operative trust between Bude Infant School, Bude Junior School, Budehaven Community School, Jacobstow Community Primary School, Kilkhampton Junior and Infant School, Stratton Primary School and Whitstone Community Primary School will begin on November 1.

Jeremy Dowling, chairman of Budehaven Community School governors, said: "This is going to mean that from November all of the existing maintained schools in this part of North Cornwall will be working together even more closely than we have done in the past, to guarantee the best possible outcomes for all our children and young people."

Budehaven's head teacher David Barton said the next stage would involve the publication of a statutory notice setting out the proposal to form the trust.

Jane Adams, head teacher at Kilkhampton Junior and Infant School, said: "Of course we have already worked together informally for years but this is a fantastic opportunity to make efficient use of all our resources to maximise benefit for all learners – and we are all immensely excited by the prospect."
