TODAY marks the start of an amazing adventure for one dedicated supporter of North Devon Hospice (assuming you pick up your Journal hot off the press and are reading this on Thursday).

Russ Johns has set himself the daunting challenge of riding solo from Barnstaple to Cape Town on a motorcycle, and he is doing it all in aid of our local hospice.

He will travel through some tough and potentially dangerous terrain, ranging from deserts to tropical rainforests. He is putting himself through this ordeal to raise sponsorship and awareness. He will be visiting a hospice in each of the African countries he passes through, highlighting the plight of the hospice movement which is far less developed on that continent.

Russ departs for his epic mission from North Devon Hospice today and if you would like to keep up to date with his progress or even contribute to the cause, visit www.hospiceafric anadventure.co.uk.

Of course, you can also support the hospice from the comfort of your own home. Our Lottery Club is a great way to do this by playing for just £1 a week, and you stand to win one of 35 cash prizes.

The winner of this week's £1,000 top prize is Mrs Hodges (Lottery No. 10986) from Barnstaple. Mrs Y C (09377) of Bideford won £100 and Mr M J (45212) of Swimbridge won £75. Mr C B (06173), our £50 winner, lives in Ilfracombe and our £25 winner, Mrs B C (43593), lives in Bideford. Congratulations to the other 30 prizewinners for this week's draw and thank you so much to all our Lottery Club members and to our wonderful volunteers, collectors and recruiters for your ongoing support. If you would like to become part of North Devon Hospice's Lottery Club, please contact me on 01271 347217.

Mike Penny,

North Devon Hospice Lottery Manager.
