ROB FARKINS headed the winning goal as Bideford beat St Albans City 1-0 in the Evo-Stik League Southern premier division.
The defender met a corner from Connor Clifford to score in the 72nd minute, lifting the Robins out of the relegation zone.
And Bideford defended solidly against late pressure to hold out for their first clean sheet of the season.
Goalkeeper Paul Hider was rarely tested as the home defence, with Farkins and Aaron Harper-Penman in good form, stood up against a St Albans team including Barry Hayles, the former Premier League striker.
In a game of few real chances, Bideford created the best openings, particularly in a positive first half.
Kevin Squire was denied by goalkeeper Nick Jupp and Matt Andrew headed over, while at the other end Juan Onieva had a close-range effort chalked out for offside.
Defences remained on top in the second half but Farkins climbed at a corner to give Bideford their fourth win of the season.
The victory moves them out of the bottom two, one point ahead of Hitchin Town who were beaten by fellow strugglers Banbury United.
Ilfracombe Town allowed a two-goal lead slip as they were beaten 3-2 at home by Radstock Town in the Toolstation Western League.
Lee Francis and Ryan Turner put Combe 2-0 up with goals either side a of a missed penalty by Billy Tucker.
Radstock hit back to draw level, though, and after Crag Allan, the Ilfracombe defender, was sent off for a two-footed challenge, they took advantage of the extra man to net a winner.
Barnstaple Town have now gone ten league games without a win after collapsing to a 7-0 defeat at Bishop Sutton.
