A large stretch of road near George Nympton remains closed after a section of it collapsed on Monday morning.
A 23-mile diversion remains in place after a section of the unclassified road collapsed just before Wampford Bridge between Bishops Nympton and Kings Nympton.
The road remains closed in both directions between the Parklands junction in South Molton and the A377 junction near Elstone.
Police and council highways crews closed the road after a member of the public contacted the emergency services reporting it had collapsed at around 12.10pm.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the road surface had collapsed on one side of the carriageway.
Officers at the scene described the collapse as “very deep” and said the road surface had fallen into floodwater below it.
Nobody was injured in the collapse and no vehicles were damaged.
A structural engineer was called to the scene to assess the situation. It is expected the road will remain closed for some time.
The road has been classed as “not safe to pass” by police and a 23-mile diversion put in place forces motorists to drive down to Witheridge.
