A RETIRED plumber who had suffered from depression for nearly 40 years hanged himself at his home in May, an inquest heard.
Barry Pascoe, 64, of Sunnybank in Barnstaple, was found by his wife Pauline on May 31 just after 11am.
The inquest into his death was held on Thursday at North Devon Magistrates' Court.
Dr Richard Holman, Mr Pascoe's GP, confirmed that his patient had a long history of depression which began in 1973 and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1999.
Coroner Dr Elizabeth Earland recorded a verdict of suicide.
She said: "Mr Pascoe had given up the struggle and was aware of the consequences of his actions.
"He took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed."
