TORRIDGE District Council has announced planned road works to improve traffic in Northam Burrows.

The road across Northam Burrows from Pimpley Gate at Sandymere, to the parking area adjacent to the Pebbleridge bridge, is due to be resurfaced.

The works will involve repairs, resurfacing and kerbing of the road, and alterations at the entrance to improve traffic flow.

The £145,000 contract has been awarded to local company Devon & Cornwall Surfacing.

During the works, access from Sandymere Road will remain closed to vehicles which will be redirected to the Pebbleridge Road entrance at Westward Ho!, but pedestrian access will be available at all times.

Lead member for the Natural and Built Environment councillor Gaye Tabor said: "We do our best to maintain Northam Burrows for everyone to enjoy.

"These days with the constant cutbacks in funding it's more and more difficult to allocate the meagre budgets, so I'm delighted that these works to improve the Sandymere road have begun."

Work on the Sandymere road will begin on April 8 and should be completed by the end of May. Vehicle access to the Burrows will still be available at the Watertown and Westward Ho! gates. Pedestrian access will not be affected.
