THE fact the Green Dragon Inn is sat by Dragon Hill scored it points before we even walked through the door. But the pub in Langtree near Torrington had much more to offer.
The cosy bar area is inviting and the restaurant, divided from the main hub, has a homely feel despite its relatively large size. Bright and fresh, it was a really pleasant environment to eat in.
We started the meal with tomato and basil bruschetta for me, and chicken liver parfait with red onion chutney and toast for my fellow diner.
My tastebuds were suitably tickled by the refreshing combination of flavours and textures, and the bread's perfect balance of crispy and soft. The parfait had my fellow foodie licking his lips like the cat that got the cream, and he was impressed by the addition of a side salad to give the dish a further dimension.
He followed this with a main course of duck with hoisin noodles and I opted for the fish pie. We were rewarded with generous portions of satisfying and extremely tasty food.
The pie, consisting of prawns, salmon, cod and peas, with a deliciously indulgent topping of cheesy mashed potato, was a joy to eat. The duck was described by my fellow diner as tender and succulent, a perfect foil for the noodles, blending together harmoniously in the rich hoisin sauce.
While neither of us really needed a dessert, we mused that need and want are two different things and asked for the sweet menu.
Profiteroles and apple tart with custard duly arrived. Old favourites executed to a high standard.
