A protest will be held in the centre of Barnstaple tonight to oppose plans to move North Devon's Search and Rescue crew to Wales.
North Devon district councillor Frank Biederman is organising the protest in an attempt to stop the helicopters based at RMB Chivenor being moved 50 miles away to St Athan in Wales.
The announcement was made today that the running of the search and rescue service will be handed to American-owned company Bristow after 2015.
People across North Devon have taken to social media sites to air concerns about the proposals.
Mr Biederman has decided to take his views one step further by rallying people to join him in The Square in Barnstaple at 5.30pm tonight to make a stand against the proposals.
He said: "We must send a message to this government that by taking away our valued Search and Rescue Squadron from Chivenor they have taken a step too far.
"If you are concerned at this latest blow to North Devon then join with me on the Square at Barnstaple to protest.
"Please make up banners and placards. It is time to get North Devon's voice heard."
