DOZENS of farming hopefuls are today expected to look round a 125-acre farm in North Devon with an eye to making a start in the industry.

It's a viewing day to help decide who will apply to rent the farm from Devon County Council.

The council's farm estates committee is letting Lower Northchurch, which includes a three bedroom house, from March 25 for an initial fixed term of seven years.

The council works with a property company, nps group to manage its 75 farm tenancies and 10,000 acres of land.

Land agent Claire Sampson said up to 30 people had made initial inquiries but it's not clear how many will attend the viewing which starts at 10am.

Potential tenants will be interviewed by the estates committee members about their hopes, experience, and business plans.

The council advertised five farm tenancies last year and two will change hands this March.

The application closing date for Lower Northchurch is February 6.

The council said most new entrants would be expected to take every opportunity to progress to a larger farm, either within the estate or the private sector.
