POLICE in Bideford have welcomed a new member and leader to their team who is set to use his previous experience to make his mark on policing in the town.

Paul McWhinnie joined the team following four years with the Criminal Investigation Department in Barnstaple.

The 41-year-old joined the force in Barnstaple in 1995, and has been based in North Devon ever since, including a previous stint in Bideford as a response officer.

Paul said the force would be placing greater focus on community engagement.

He is currently involved in a family-based project with around 80 families in Bideford. He said at least 50 per cent of the families involved had seen positive changes since they joined the programme.

Paul is hoping to address street drinking and encourage recruitment of more special constables.
