POLICE are warning people to be aware of door-to-door cold callers offering tree felling services.

It comes after a number of people in the Braunton area reported having paid money up front and then not receiving the services they were promised.

In one case a woman paid £300 for some tree felling work to be carried out.

The offenders then took another £200, saying they would return later in the day to finish off the work which was never carried out.

North Devon sector inspector Roger Bartlett is warning people to be aware of the risks involved in dealing with any cold callers.

"Do not part with your cash the first time they come to the door," he said. "Take details and get back to them later if necessary.

"While some of these groups are legitimate, there is more risk of being ripped off. Using local tree fellers will help the economy and is a safer option."
