A holidaymaker who died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Croyde on New Year's Eve is from Bristol, police have confirmed.
The 42-year-old woman was from the Kingswood area of Bristol and was on holiday in North Devon when the tragedy occurred.
Emergency services were called at around 11.25am on Tuesday after receiving reports the woman had been swept out to sea after getting into difficulty while “swimming or surfing”.
Despite search attempts by the coastguard helicopter and lifeboat crews she could not be found until she was winched from the shore at around 1pm.
She was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital a search and rescue Sea King from RMB Chivenor but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
