A PLANNING application for a £5 million community centre in Bideford have been submitted to Torridge District Council.
The outline application reveals the plans for the Bridge Centre at Moreton Park which have been put together by charity Wings South West.
Initially the plans for the community centre were going to be submitted at the same time as plans to build 232 homes on the site.
But complications arose with the two schemes being submitted at the same time and the community centre was labelled as unviable.
This led to the application for the housing development from developer Redrow Homes being submitted separately and given planning permission earlier this year.
However after further discussion between the planners at TDC, Wings and Redrow an application has now been submitted for the community centre.
The community centre is due to house sports facilities, 500 seat conference centre, community hall, restaurant and shop, both run by Wings.
Paul Bowser from Wings said that once the planning permission is given the charity will then have 18 months to raise the £5 million needed to build the centre.
Currently they have £1 million ring fenced for the project.
Mr Bowser added: "It will be a three phase project with the shop and restaurant part the first, then the youth and sports facility and then the theatre and conference centre.
“Once the building work starts, which if we get planning permission and the funds will hopefully be in 18 months, it will then about 12-18 months to complete the building.”
