NORTH DEVON clubs came together for an exciting evening of sprint races during Appledore and Instow Regatta week.
Spectators lining the quay were not disappointed as the friendly rivals put every last ounce of grit, energy and determination into some nail-biting finishes.
Muscles pumped and blades bowed under the pressure as Appledore and Torridge men’s A crews were neck and neck within 10 metres of the finish.
Torridge, despite making a final surge, were unable to catch the Appledore men at the line.
A similar battle took place between the ladies’ A crews and again it was Appledore who raised their blades in victory.
Close behind were the Clovelly and Bude boats.
The Torridge crews reversed the trend in the men’s and ladies’ B races, narrowly taking victories over Appledore in second place.
The mixed race brought another first place for Appledore.
Matt Cox, the 19-year-old Appledore A rower, was awarded the Oar Trophy for the greatest contribution to regatta week.
The final event of the gig racing season is the Newquay Championships, with the ladies competing on Saturday and Sunday followed by the men on September 14-15.
