A LAST ditch attempt has been made by over a 1,000 people for a community centre to be reentered into a development proposal in Bideford.

Plans submitted to Torridge District Council by Redrow Homes to redevelop the Moreton Park area of the town originally included a community centre for the area.

However in September it was revealed the developers were submitting the plans for 232 new homes, including a 59 unit care home, without the community centre outraging hundreds of people in the area who had been promised the facility.

A 1,000 signature petition was handed into Torridge District Council last week calling for the community centre to be re-added to the plans.

Redrow claimed the reason behind the decision was that planning officers at Torridge District Council had advised them the plans with the community centre would not be viable.

But Torridge District Council said they had simply asked for more time to review the plans to ensure the proposal was viable.

The community centre, known as the Bridge Centre, had been a joint project between Redrow and youth charity Wings South West.

Paul Bowser, from Wings, handed in the petition to the council.

He said: "We have put the petition together over the last few weeks. When we were told the project was not viable we could not understand it.

"We have no idea where the decision originated from.

"Redrow have been fantastic but they have had no choice but to take the centre out.

"It will include a conference hall, gym and other facilities, people feel their voices haven't been heard."

Both Redrow and Torridge District Council had no further comments to make at this stage.

The plans from Redrow will go before Torridge District Council's plan committee at their meeting on Thursday in Bideford Town Hall where a decision will be made on the application.
