THIS incredible photo captures the moment an Ilfracombe chapel was struck by a huge bolt of lightning.
St Nicholas Chapel suffered broken windows and electrical damage after being struck by the bolt during a storm on Friday night.
The historical 13th century building sits on top of the hill looking out to sea, and is the longest running continuously lit coastal navigational aid in the country.
Urgent action is now being taken by Ilfracombe Rotary Club, who voluntarily run the chapel, to ensure that the North Devon Council, who maintain the light, quickly repair the damage.
Ann Doody, from Ilfracombe Rotary club was first on the scene and along with president Nigel Vince to ensure the building was safe and open for tourists as usual the following morning.
Nigel said: "We were extremely fortunate that the building did not catch fire and cause major damage and are heartened by the quick responses of the fire brigade and the harbour master".
