IT MAY not seem like it, but summer is on its way, writes Rob Tibbles.
A good indicator the seasons are moving is the annual announcement of the headline acts for Croyde music and surf festival Goldcoast Oceanfest.
It has always been a celebration of surfing and beach culture, so as well as announcing musical acts such as Clean Bandit and Natty, it was revealed this week that the festival, on June 21-22, would mark the start of the Rip Curl Grom Search series.
Grom is surf slang for junior surfer and the Search aims to crown the top two under-16 boys and girls and whisk them off to join winners from around Europe to battle it out for places at the world finals in Australia.
The 2013 Search saw North Devon riders Will Bailey and Peony Knight put in impressive displays to earn places in the European finals alongside Emily Williams and Max Payne.
Oceanfest's Shaun Latham said: "We're stoked to welcome back the Grom Search, continuing our support for the sport and Surfing GB.
"For the last 16 years, Oceanfest has strived to create an alternative platform for the sport to develop positively in an environment where surfers feel inspired to compete."
